With Easter just around the corner and the sight of supermarket aisles stacked with shelf after shelf of chocolate eggs, our minds are taken to two of our favourite things – chocolate and packaging!

It’s especially close to our hearts as packaging fragile and precious items is what AirPack is all about, after all.

In one of the major developments in the packaging industry, William Thompson Horry revolutionised the Easter egg market in the 1950’s. William Horry was a cartoon designer and was working on a design for packaging light bulbs, when he realised that this style of packing would be ideal to protect fragile chocolate Easter eggs.  This clever packaging not only protected the fragile chocolate but also gave the opportunity to display the egg itself at the point of sale.

Needless to say the idea really took off, delivering huge benefits to chocolate manufacturers in the speed of the production process and dramatically reducing the level of breakages in transit, and therefore costs. All at the same time as offering a great method of branding and presentation to the customer.

His innovation changed the market forever, and now over 80 million chocolate eggs will be consumed over the Easter period. So, at this time of year we salute William Horry and his great innovation, which we think represents everything great protective packaging should be!

Enjoy all that chocolate!
